Freedom from Pornography – Barabbas Road Church in San Diego

This “Whiteboard Wednesday” YouTube video focuses on fighting and overcoming an addiction to pornography. Pastor Paul from Barabbas Road Church in San Diego casts light on the tempting nature of porn and the steps that can be taken to overcome it.

Pornography, by definition, is any explicit content in the form of an image, text, story, writing, or audio recording. Greek in origin, the word pornography literally means “sexually immoral writings.” 1 Thessalonians 4:3 says that the will of God is that we abstain from sexual immorality; therefore, the Bible refutes pornography. It is not acceptable in God’s eyes, yet it is a temptation that can be overcome with God’s help.

Three factors contribute to a porn addiction: accessibility, accountability, and appetite. Accessibility and appetite must be removed and accountability must be arranged in order for someone to conquer an addiction to pornography. First, any form of accessibility to porn must be eliminated. An access point could be a computer, phone, or printed material. If someone is truly intent on beating a porn addiction, all access points must be completely and totally removed. This could even mean using a basic phone – one that does not have internet access – and giving up a smart phone, for example. Take any extreme measure necessary.

Second, an addicted person must find accountability. Being accountable means intentionally and openly communicating with someone about struggling with pornography. Here is where the body of Christ, like Christian friends or your local church body such as Barabbas Road Church in San Diego, can be of crucial assistance. Pastors and church leaders are accountable resources, too. They are not sin free and do not think of themselves more highly than others. Even after someone has adopted excellent accountability partners, action must still be taken by that person to intently fight the addiction and completely remove it from life.

Third, an addicted person must stop feeding the porn-hungry appetite. Instead, that person should focus on feeding the spirit. This means being proactive in feeding the soul instead of giving in to the temptation to feed the desire for pornography. Get radical and remove any possible outlet that may satisfy the appetite. Pray consistently, read God’s Word frequently, and be on guard. Reach for God – He alone offers hope and grace to help overcome any level of temptation or addiction.
